A Note from the Chairman
Welcome to St. Mary's Healthcare Center, where we are building health care excellence on the firm foundation of a legacy of care. St. Mary's Healthcare Center was built by the Benedictine Sisters over 100 years ago. The Sisters cared for the health needs of people of central South Dakota from birth until the end of life. Ten years ago, several Catholic health care systems came together to form Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI). St. Mary's Healthcare Center is sponsored by CHI and has been part of this larger group which operates health care centers in 19 states.
The Governing Board of St. Mary's Healthcare Center is comprised of interested citizens and community leaders residing in central South Dakota. The Board members carefully consider issues that affect the health care of all people in the region as well as the financial viability of the organization. We recognize that the hospital has been here over 100 years and our goal is to make certain that in the next 100 years we continue to grow, build upon and improve the delivery of health care services to our citizens.
The Governing Board is very proud of our staff, which includes 450 employees serving in the Pierre area and 100 employees serving the Gettysburg Medical Center in Gettysburg, SD.We are also proud of the medical staff of physicians who practice in our facilities. Our staff learned its culture and caring work ethic from the founding Sisters. They continue the Catholic heritage and keep Jesus present in our facilities through the care they give, irrespective of the specific role they may fulfill in our operations. We value each and every one of them.
We welcome all people who need our services, regardless of their ability to pay. Even though we are part of the large CHI system, we remain and function as a community hospital, a long-term care facility and an independent living home. We are your friends, your neighbors and your family. Thus, our slogan is "Family Caring for Family".
