Gettysburg Medical Center is nestled in the heart of Gettysburg, SD, which also has a rich history. The town was founded by some veterans of the civil war in 1883. They originally sought to name the city Meade in honor of General Meade, renowned for his leadership in the Battle of Gettysburg. However, the Post Office rejected that name, because it was already too popular, so Captain John W. Kennedy, a member of General Howard's 11th Corps during the Battle of Gettysburg, submitted the name Gettysburg instead. It was accepted and the town's motto is "Gettysburg, where the battle wasn't."
Gettysburg's farming and ranching provide the economic base for the community, however recreational activities including hunting, fishing and golf are beginning to play a larger role.
Gettysburg is a friendly community of approximately 1350 people and 124 businesses. The small caring community is an ideal place for Gettysburg Medical Center where "Big City" medical treatment is coupled with small town friendliness and individual caring.
